The Lady Warriors and Warriors had an exciting weekend at Pojo Stadium in Springtown April 26-27 at the 2A Region 2 Track and Field Championship. Several athletes and relay teams qualified for the state meet, which will be held May 10-11 at the University of Texas in Austin. Click here for the schedule. The Lady Warriors finished in third place overall.
Junior Kenzi Phipps qualified for state with a 1st Place finish in women’s high jump. She set a new personal record of 5’3”.
Junior Kentavion Smith made the podium with a 3rd Place finish in men’s high jump, and he could still qualify for state in a wild card spot.
Senior Amelia Butler will be making her third trip to the state meet in the women’s 800m run; Amelia finished in 2nd Place.
Junior Tionna Cooper dominated the women’s 200m dash; she won the gold (1st Place). Soph. Azia Brigham finished in 5th Place in that same event.
Junior Colby Connelly finished in 4th Place in the men’s 110m hurdles.
The real excitement, however, came with the relay teams. The ladies first qualified for state in the 4x100 relay with a 2nd Place finish, and then they topped that off with a 1st Place finish in the 4x200 relay. The runners for both of those relays are juniors Tionna Cooper and Za’Naysha Houston and sophomores Azia Brigham and Shakira Cooper. The 4x400 relay team competed very well and finished in 4th Place. Those runners are senior Amelia Butler, juniors Kenzi Phipps and Allie Morrison, and freshman Aniyah Smith.
And, for the first time in many, many years, the Warriors are sending a relay team to the state meet. The 4x100 relay team narrowly missed qualifying and finished in 3rd Place. Those runners are seniors Devin Fulbright and Aaron Nelson and juniors Trel Pruitt and Ta Smith. But the boys had their revenge with the 4x200 relay and finished in a very close 1st Place. Members of the 4x200 relay team are seniors Devin Fulbright and Aaron Nelson, junior Trel Pruitt, and soph. Andrew Campbell.
